Answer the following: Does the introduction to Ta-Nehisi Coatess narrative, Paranoid Style of Policing, enhance or hurt his argument? Explain your reasoning.
Thesis:
In “The Paranoid Style of American Policing”, Coates explains the police departments code of keeping the community safe as they are so called protectors of the city. Coates argues that police officers over rule their authority as police officers, because they abuse their roles. The author explains why police officers use brutal force towards criminal occurrences. Even though there are other resolutions to deescalate a situation. Coates provides situations to where police officers resolve to killing the innocent instead of resolving the situation with ethical methods. Coates overall message is to show the reader a better understanding to why police officers react the way they do, by focusing on the audiences direct feelings, morals as a human, and the choice of action.
- Identify your evidence from the narratives and a one- or two-sentence explanation of how it relates to your thesis.
a. Through Coates message towards police brutality the writer compares an incident between his father and a situation that his father handled with words to deescalate the situation. In the text Coates stated, That wasnt the first time Id seen my father confront the violence of young people without resorting to killing them. This was not remarkable. When you live in communities like ours or perhaps any community mediating violence between young people is part of being an adult (Coates). The author explains how his father was a perfect example on how police officers should understand a situation first and resolve it through care and precision. The author uses choice of action as an example to his fathers incident and how he handled the situation.
b. Coates explains that, Likely he called them because he invested them with some measure of legitimacy. This is understandable. In America, police officers are agents of the state and thus bound by the social contract in a way that criminals, and even random citizens, are not (Coates). Coates targets the readers sense of emotion/feeling, because he explains that police officers and physically and mentally trained to react to situations with care, so that the community has a sense of assurance that he or she will not be harmed with brutal force. This can direct the readers attention, because it can be relatable to situations where a police officer either deescalated a situation with care or carried the situation with brutal force or violence.
c. Coates explains his viewpoints as a writer and quotes, a mother loss of her son and it helps the reader directs his or her morals as a human being to feel how the mother felt when losing her son to police brutality. Police officers need to have morals as humans as well to help better the communitys image of themselves. If not, chaos can ignite in the community and it can affect the whole system and everyone’s lifestyle. In todays society police officers are considered scum to their roles of resolving to violence to deescalate a situation. This is just unjust, and it really shows how low police officers must go to just prove a point. Proves to everyone that police officers don’t share the same morals as the community does. Coates does a great job in focusing this action.
d. Coates explains his claim by truly focusing on the readers emotions and helps the reader feel for the community. The author focuses on comparing and contrasting his fathers actions towards deescalating a situation and how police officers do. This is a great way attract the audiences sympathy for the community and what they must go through.
If someone could help me that would be highly appreciated.
