This is another choose your own adventure serious game. In this one you get to play the CISO of a mythical hospital called Golden Oaks Medical Center and make decisions that keep the hospital safe from ransomware and prevent loss of life (but, no pressure ;-).
- Watch Data Center Attack: The Game, Trend Micro, March 2017
Data Center Attack (a trailer for the game)
- The game is here https://resources.trendmicro.com/datacenter-attack.html
Note: the game is sponsored by Trend Micro and they want to sell their products. You don’t have to buy their products in real life – but maybe be aware the key to the game is buying and using their products in the simulation…
You do not have to successfully complete the game and get the “well done” from the British guy (although it is more satisfying if you reach that point). You are graded on your documentation of your gameplay and thought processes. Provided you have both gameplay and thought processes documented the format is up to you. To document your gameplay, you can use static screen captures of your decision points or record the entire game using Windows 10 Game Mode or whatever other tool allows you to record your screen – you can upload to YouTube as an unlisted video and post the link to YouTube instead of doing battle with Blackboard. Recording the game as a video allows you to discuss your motivations as you are playing, which serves to document your thought processes.
In addition to the documentation of gameplay and thought processes you will need to write at least 100 words on what you learned from playing the game and whether you felt more confident in this game than in the first two.
Tasks
- Watch the trailer. .
- Play the game, documenting your gameplay through static screen captures or video capture (if you use video capture please upload to YouTube as an unlisted video or use another cloud-based storage solution) Pay particular attention to how the introductory material makes you feel.Take notes on your feelings to incorporate into your analysis
- Document your thought processes as you play the game, answering both how and why you made the choices you did.
- If you “fail miserably”, play the game at least once more, again doing tasks 2 and 3 and learning from the debrief you got after the “failed miserably” message. If you get the “well done”, take a screen capture of that (it’s around the 25 second mark on that track) and include it in your paper.
- Write at least 100 words on what you learned from playing the game. Include whether you felt more confident in this game than in the first two.
