Different Voices
Journal
For information about Journals, refer to the Keeping a Journal section in the Module 1 journal exercise.
Journal 2
In this exercise, keep a journal for several days and make notes about how people speak while you are out and about. Find five different voices and include the words and phrases you hear. Include accents, inflections, slang, pace, tone of voice, volume, and any aspect of a person’s voice that strikes you. Do not hold back. Capture the essence of the person as you hear them speak.
In your journal response:
Share the journal entry and include the approximate time(s) and place(s) at the beginning of your entry.
Address these reflection questions: Based on this journal exercise, how do such differentiations in character voice reveal a character’s development? How does a surplus or lack of descriptive details shape the character’s development from the narrator’s perspective?
