Description
Discuss the need for identifying the function of problem behavior by answering the following questions:
- What do we mean by “the function of a behavior?”
- How and why do we need to identify it?
- What are at least 3 possible functions?
- Why is the distinction between the topography (i.e., the form) vs. the function of a behavior important when assessing and treating problem behavior? (Hint: If Sarah’s hitting is reinforced by attention and Caleb’s hitting is reinforced by escape from demands, would the same type of intervention work to reduce hitting for both children?) Explain your answer by providing a new example.
