What is the value of doing this assignment? This assignment allows you to practice your problem-solving skill by identifying and communicating the key parts of the scientific method. Once you understand the scientific method and how it helps scientists seek answers to important questions, you can apply it when answering questions and solving problems in your own life. Problem solving is a universal skill and one you will continue to refine as you progress throughout your career. This assignment asks you to use what you’ve learned in the first three weeks of the course about communicating the science behind innovations.

Worried about where to start? The good news is that you’ve already laid the foundation with the webtext activities in Chapters 1 and 2. This assignment will apply what you learned in those activities.

Your goal for this assignment is to: Practice your problem-solving skill. You will do this by creating a handout that provides an overview of clinical genetic testing for breast cancer.

What you need to complete this assignment:

  • Resources on genetic testing provided to you in Chapter 3 of the webtext.
  • Handout downloaded from your completed answers in the webtext.

Steps to complete: Complete the assignment in Chapter 3 of the webtext. When you are finished, download your assignment and submit your Word document in the Assignment link in Week 3 in Blackboard using the following steps:

STEP 1: Review the scenario for Assignment 1 and read the material provided in Chapter 3 of the webtext.

Scenario: You work as an assistant at a breast cancer center, where doctors often order genetic tests for patients who don’t know much about them. Your manager has asked you to write up a handout that gives patients an overview of clinical genetic testing for breast cancer. It’s important that your document presents accurate and relevant information. The purpose of your handout is to inform patients accurately of both the risks and the benefits of clinical genetic testing. Rather than offer specific advice, the organization wants to lay out all the information so that patients can make informed decisions for themselves.

STEP 2: Complete the template in Chapter 3 of the webtext.

STEP 3: Download the completed handout from Chapter 3 of the webtext.

STEP 4: Upload the completed handout to the Assignment 1 link in Week 3 of Blackboard.
