- Go to the site, http://biomicromet.ucdavis.edu then go to the Gallery menu, and choose “Field and Sensor Photos”. Identify the clouds that appear in the first photo/image that appears.
- Consider slides 27 or 28 of the first lecture power point (also Figure 6.3 of the text) to calculate the environmental lapse rate.
Identify the stability type (stable, unstable, or conditionally unstable) for the stratosphere. Show all calculations. Give a brief explanation for your answer.
- Now use the tables from excerpts taken from the US Standard Atmosphere, labeled “USStandardAtmosphere” in the Files section of Canvas under Homework. Calculate the environmental lapse rate from the table, of the atmosphere between the surface at Z = 0 m and the height of Z = 4000 m. These tables are also attached to this pdf, below. (a) In which atmospheric layer (Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, or Thermosphere) are these heights? (b) Identify the stability type (stable, unstable, or conditionally unstable) for the layer between 0 m height and 4000 m height. Show all calculations. Give a brief explanation for your answer.
