you now know that you will be engaged in a research project for the rest of this course.
Your success depends largely on choosing an academic subject that is (A) debatable among a specific educated group, and (B) has established scholarly research also engaging in the debate and published and available in universities Library.
Keeping in mind you have been warned to avoid certain “hot topics,” what are some current topics of debate that interest you? Naturally, your engagement in the course will be a more positive experience if you are able to spend your time researching and discussing a subject that you care about.
Use some of the following questions to help shape a discussion on one (1) or two (2) topics you are considering for your persuasive/argumentative research paper.
What topic interests you the most? Why? What makes your topic of interest debatable? Who would engage in an educated debate on the matter with you? What might your argumentative thesis look like?
Have you engaged in some preliminary research on your topic/s of interest? What do you expect to find when you research the topic? What kind of support might your opposing audience use that you might have to address in your own argument? What difficulties do you think you might run into as you pursue your topic/s of interest?
