Technology and Development

Do you agree or disagree with your colleague’s conclusion(s) regarding the positive and/or negative effect(s) of technology within his or her chosen developmental periods? Whether or not you agree with your colleague’s conclusion(s), describe how one of your colleague’s stated advantages may actually be a disadvantage in the chosen developmental periods or vice versa. Speculate regarding relative advantages and disadvantages in another developmental period (e.g., infancy or adulthood). Suggest mediating factors for the influence(s) of technology that might have been overlooked by your colleague.

Technology can be great for any age child, when it’s monitored properly. . Television can have a negative effect if not monitored. Television is filled with violence and sex but has some educational channels that can be great for learning. Computers can be a great addition to learning with various educational qualities for children. It enhances cognitive skills as well as educational skills. Children can enjoy learning. The only concern I have with the children using technology is the lack of social skills. Children spend so much time on their computers that they don’t take time out to play with siblings or friends. Cell phones are good for communication and socializing. Technology is evolving and we need to get on aboard and monitor it accordingly to ensure the safety of the children.

When it comes to children and using technology my main take away from the readings was that they can be affected to some extent whether it be through television, computers or even cell phones. The authors stated that educational programing could definitely benefit children in the developmental process. I believe that one of the reasons is because TV is able to offer certain scenarios that would otherwise not be experienced in the everyday life of a child. Dora the Exploring was mentioned in one of the article and I believe that is a good thing since she does use common spanish words throughout the show. I mean just think of it like this way say a child is born in a rural and non diverse part of the country and not saying that is a bad thing but through technology they are able to get a glimpse of diversity that they may have not been exposed to until much later in life.

Overall when used right I think the benefits of technology outweigh the negative associations. Of course this topic like many others needs to have some type of supervision from the parents. As the authors mentioned it is important to screen the programs that children are exposed to in order to help them learn the educational and social skills that these types of shows are trying to promote.
