Hi, Please See attached
Reflection paper must include (1) a short reaction/reflection to the reading, highlighting its argument, major themes and your thoughts/analysis about points raised (please note, you can also use this space to engage the reading creatively through poetry or spoken word); and (2) at least three key quotes from that reading .  It is estimated that the paper will be 1-2 typed pages. Because there are multiple readings, I do not expect you to reflect on all of them.  Choose either one reading by itself or choose a theme that runs through multiple readings.  The same goes for the quotes. Discussion – Bad Forensics As the readings and video show, forensics are often wrong.  If you were on a jury and the only evidence was forensic evidence, would you convict on only that evidence?  Why or why not?  Is some forensic evidence better than others? Reply to Trevor  needed . Top of Form Prior to this week’s readings, I believed forensics to be almost foolproof. Then I read the article, Fingerprints:Infallible Evidence by Lesley Stahl. As the article states, “On TV, fingerprints are matched automatically, by computer. But that never happens in real-life forensic work”. I did not know that a computer only narrows the search by going through the database- I assumed the computer was making the match. Never would I have presumed that humans are making the match by eye. A computer’s reliabaility and accuracy is configured using specific data, eliminating human analysis. The interpretation by the human eye is just that- perception. TV shows I have watched in the past have told how forensic evidence can be minimal at best and easily contaminated but to then learn that there are humans making the final determination when it comes to fingerprints changes my opinion on conviction. If fingerprints were the only forensic evidence I would most likely not convict based on that as the only evidence. I would need to know the exact procedure in determining the match. The article also states ,”there’s complete disagreement amongst fingerprint examiners themselves as to what they need to see in order to declare a match”. That makes the reliability of fingerprint forensics even less accurate- there are no predetermined or mandatory requirements. Knowing that fingerprint forensics are human judgement and could easily involve human inaccuracies, I would most likely not convict on only fingerprints. Bottom of Form
