Students must complete three steps in the speech:
1) Show that the belief is held by a significant number of people. You might consider conducting a survey of your friends, or showing articles that have been written affirming the belief.
2) Research both sides of the claim. What is the evidence provided by the people or groups who affirm the belief? What is the evidence provided by those who contest the belief? HUC 106 Informative Speech aka Myth Buster Speech Outline Name: Dulce Villar Date: February 1, 2020 Speech title: “Having tattoos makes it harder to get a job”: The truth about tattoos stereotypes in the job industry Specific Purpose: To inform the audience how having tattoos can make it harder for them and define whether they get a job or not Central Idea: This speech is going to go into details about how tattoos can have people stereotyping others and it would impact whether you get a job or not. Because is common in our society to judge others by the way they look. Introduction Attention Getter: While growing up most of us experienced being criticized by our family members or friends because of the way we dress or the way we act. It personally annoyed me when others gave me their unnecessary opinion because I felt like I could not be myself. The same thing goes for people who have tattoos and are in the working industry because some of those organizations well judge them based on their tattoos and it will make it harder to find a job. Question under investigation: Do tattoos make it harder to get a job because of judgement based on appearance? Specific purpose (should include some indication of your findings): To open the eyes of society in order for them to understand that having tattoos does that make you any different than any other person. The way A person looks look should not affect or express was in your heart. Body A controversy exists: Like every good story everything has 2 sides Some people believe Side A: With the ideology that it doesn’t make a difference whether or not you have tattoos because in an interview what counts is the resume and experience You can bring into the workplace & not the way that you look. Some people believe Side B: .Which is a different perspective that the ink that you decided to put in your body can affect the way the others perceive you as a person, making it harder to get a job due to the fact that as an employee you will be representing your cooperation or company and with your appearance and the way you carry yourself. The article named “Research reveals how your tattoos affect your chances of getting the job” written by WORKOPOLIS goes a little more in detail about how it affects the workplace being an employer with tattoos “A few months ago we reported on a standoff between the Ottawa Convention Centre, and three employees who had been locked out over their refusal to cover their tattoos. And, on the other side, it was recently reported that Starbucks is considering revisiting its longstanding policy that employees must cover tattoos. So, it’s still an issue. How much of an issue?” Investigation into Side 1 (start with the side with less evidence): Evidence 1 in favor of this side: Times were different, and it keeps changing as well as lifestyles and culture making tattoos more acceptable into society and less judgmental. This shows that there is a lot more than physical appearance to an individual. Citation 1 in favor of this side: “This obviously depends on how you work and what you’re meant to be doing, but overall the study shows that Americans have become very accepting of tattoos. They’re probably not going to stand in the way of getting the job you love — so go and get that beautiful back piece and rock on.” Evidence 2 in favor of this side: There is a new meaning fr tattoos which is known too be a form of expression. The new definition of a tattoo to my generation is known to have an artistic meaning. But its more general now to be seen as something artist, now there is art and expression, representation of important event or person & show a deeper connection to it. Citation 2 in favor of this side: The article “Tattoos aren’t unprofessional” written by Caroline Margle on the platform of The Crimson White” website supports my statement because the quote says “The world is full of artistic and creative people with a craving to express their abilities, and they have turned to several forms of art to express themselves. One of these forms is inking one’s body through tattooing. Tattoos are done for several reasons. Whether it’s to honor a family member, match a best friend or simply have an imaginative creation represented on their body, people worldwide have tattoos permanently engraved on their skin.” Investigation into Side 2 (the side with more evidence): There is a big impact of having tattoos, & it affects the way others perceive you due to history. Evidence 1 in favor of this side: There has always been the stereotype of being associated with negative assumptions when it comes to tattoos. The history of how tattoos were perceived in the past is still being carried into today’s society and lifestyle because it was used to mark territories and related to gang and crime activities. Citation 1 in favor of this side: A quote that can be used to further explain how it could have an effect on how others perceive tattooed individuals is from WORKOPOLIS website and it states that “For the large majority of our positions, no it would not impact. For a position however that had a large customer facing role, depending where they were, it may impact our decision. No matter how much meaning they have for the owner, they are just not attractive nor professional looking. It does affect my decision making process when hiring.’ Evidence 2 in favor of this side: Although they are a lot of different reasons why there will be judgement towards tattooed men and women there is one that stands out and makes companies and corporations come up with regulations to assure what they think is best not only for them but for their company. The managers will argue that its not that thy don’t want to give those people the job but the fact that they will represent their company and them. It could either jeopardize or improve the customers and ratings of those corporations or agencies. Citation 2 in favor of this side: “This means that a total 77% of employers will or might be less likely to hire you if you have tattoos. We invited respondents to write in comments, a sample of which are posted below, and what many said was that tattoos might affect their decision if the tattoos were offensive or racist, or if the role was customer facing. This all makes perfect sense, the latter because even if the employer doesn’t mind the tattoos, a customer might, and it is the customer who keeps the business going.” Weighing the evidence Reasoning in favor of Side 2 or research was inconclusive: I agree more with the second side because I believe that there will always be some type of stereotype when it comes to the workplace of individuals that are tattooed. It should not make an impact on how they are seen by others, but it does and in my opinion is sad to think about it because you would assume that by now, that would be over. Additional discussion: Conclusion Review of main point 1: As society changes constantly so will the views on a lot of things and some of those different perspectives that have change are the meaning of tattoos and the symbolization of them. Review of main point 2: Some people believe that it would always be that way, in our society about 90% of the time there will be judging by the appearance because it’s what they have been taught. Review of main point 3: Clincher: Like everything in the world, there are two sides of an opinion and I hope that this speech has helped you be more informed about the different point of vies of people with tattoos in the workplace.
