Assignment paper: Unemployment, the condition of being without work and actively seeking employment, is a common issue that affects millions of individuals in the United States. Although it is perceived as a personal problem, unemployment can also reflect larger societal structural problems. Economic instability is one of the key factors contributing to the structural unemployment problem. Fluctuations in the economy, such as recessions and boom-bust cycles, lead to financial instability and create a situation where firms are more likely to lay off employees or halt hiring, resulting in unemployment. Another factor is the lack of job availability, where the number of available jobs in an economy may not be sufficient to support the number of individuals seeking employment. This results in an increased demand for jobs that exceed the supply, leading to higher levels of unemployment. The unequal distribution of wealth in society also contributes to the problem of unemployment. Providing education and training programs can help individuals develop the necessary skills to compete in the job market and improve their job-seeking abilities. On the other hand, job creation programs can help reduce unemployment by creating new job opportunities. This can be achieved through government initiatives that invest in infrastructure projects or provide incentives for businesses to hire new employees. Wealth redistribution can also help reduce unemployment by addressing the unequal distribution of wealth in society. This can be done by increasing the minimum wage, providing tax breaks for low-income individuals, or implementing financial support programs for those in need (Dannen, 2021). Addressing systemic discrimination can also be crucial in ensuring everyone has equal access to job opportunities. This can be achieved through policies aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and addressing discrimination in hiring and promotion practices. Conflict theory provides a lens through which to view unemployment as a structural societal problem. This perspective argues that social, economic, and political systems are structured in such a way that they create conflicts between different groups in society, leading to the exploitation and oppression of certain groups (Lumenlearning, n.d.). In the case of unemployment, the exploitation of workers by corporations and the unequal distribution of wealth are examples of conflicts arising from society’s structures.
