Classmate’s Post:
This article discusses whether depressive symptoms moderate appetite among heart failure (HF) patients and whether there was a correlation between appetite, and health status among this population of patients. Researching this health problem is important because 10 to 20% of those 70 years or older experience heart failure. If more research was conducted on this topic, then more could be done to improve the quality of life of patients diagnosed with heart failure. This research article presents a new way to examine a known issue. It is well known that patients with HF have a decreased appetite and many experience depressive symptoms, but the associations among appetite, depressive symptoms and health status have not been studied as much as they should be (Andreae et al., 2018). So, if depressive symptoms contribute to a loss in appetite which in turn effects negatively on health status, if providers attempted to treat the depressive symptoms, that could increase appetite therefore having a positive effect on health status in patients with HF. Normally, it is not thought to treat depressive symptoms to increase appetite which is why this is a new way to examine a known issue. The findings contribute to nursing practice. An entire study was performed to determine the associations between appetite, depressive symptoms and health status among HF patients. The results of the study indicated that depressive symptoms moderated the association between appetite and health status (Andreae et al., 2018). Due to these findings, the practice of treating depressive symptoms to increase appetite could be put into nursing practice.
