After reading the article on slum tourism:
1) Pick a side. Is slum tourism a good thing or a bad thing? I realize that for most of you both will be true. You can see the good and the bad of touring slums but for the sake of discussion pick only one side. Be sure to give at least 3 reasons why you feel slum tourism is good or bad. Your original post should be at least 100 words and your replies are expected to be at least 3 to 5 sentences. Be sure to cite the source of your information.
2) Reply to two of your classmates’ posts in a substantive manner.
This was a really hard decision to make because both sides have very good reasons why this is good and bad. I am going to chose it’s good only for some pros that I felt were worth keeping slum tourism. 1) It brings money to the community even if is enough for extra food, its something and even a little of that can help out their communities a lot. 2) It helps others see that life is different in other places and we should appreciate what we have and give to those who may not have as much we do. 3) It could help open up a variety of charities for these communities and open the eyes of government to improve the conditions of the communities as well.

Despite the fact that there are some negative connotations attached to slum tourism, I think that it has the potential to be a good thing. Tourism is an industry that generates large amounts of money annually and in some countries tourism powers the economy. Because slum tourism takes place in less developed and often poverty ridden areas, the money that is brought in by the influx of individuals touring these places can be highly beneficial as the profits are cycled into these communities. In addition to the inflow of money that can be used to improve quality of life, slum tourism also gives people the opportunity to visit these places and gain insight into unfamiliar cultures and ways of life. Many people have preconceived notions and views, so slum tourism can allow people to get firsthand experience, knowledge, and interactions from the people and environment. In addition to personal impacts, slum tourism also presents the opportunity for individuals to share their own experiences as well as the experiences of the inhabitants with others. Things like photography, journalism, and art from tourism can be shared on a mass level in order to educate and illustrate the reality of living in slum areas and bring light to the social and economic issues that are present.
