Research Paper ASSI 2 Azaldin Assi Christopher Patke Hist 1301 June 7, 2022 What is the economic importance of the Erie Canal and what made it successful? The development of the Erie Canal did not only enhance social factors but also marked a significant turning point in westward expansion, which led to a massive economic boost in the region. Economic boost was associated with the transportation of goods from one part to another leading to the development of the American economic, political, and social factors. The Erie Canal was built from 1817 to 1825, traversing 363 miles to Buffalo from Albany. Comparing ar- tificial canals that have been developed in the United States, Erie was the longest and the most significant waterways project. Traversing the Canal marked a new milestone as the C anal trans- formed the map of a Newyork city . After the emergence of the C anal in the State, it encouraged other activities to be carried out, including economic and industrial activities that enhanced the revolution. Focusing on how the development of the Canal, the Canal focused on several confluences where other rivers and lakes such river Niagara, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake Champlain joined to form a vast water body . With a canal traveling longer distances, people would enjoy doing several activities, leading to the region’s social and economic impacts. This research will focus on the economic importance of the Erie Canal and the factors that made it successful. From the history of the United States, New yolk was among the states that experienced early development. With the State’s development, many traders knew that it would be a business opportunity for them to ship their products to the State as they would find a ready market. For the traders, navigating through the forests would be a tedious task as some of the traders would be attacked by wild animals while others would get tired before getting their products to the market. With the development of the Erie Canal, traders would ship their products efficiently, and there were a limited number of cases resulting from attacks from wild animals as they would hardly get in the water. ( Jack, 2016) Erie Canal covering 360 miles, allowed it to connect various territories that traders would use for various activities such as shipment of products to Newyork. With the traders traveling to New York, they would make new friends, such as European immigrants, who would teach them how to participate in activities that were associated with trade. ( Ashley, 2018 ) This made more people travel to N ewyolk as most of them considered new yolk as a state for business. The in- creased number of people who visited the State thus allowed the State to expand due to economic activities that took place in the area. During the 18th and the 19th century, it was a challenging and tedious task to transport goods from one point to another as products were tedious as most goods were transported for longer distances. (Graziano, 2021 ) Goods that needed to be transported from one S tate to another were almost impossible to ship as the long-distance hindered transportation. During transporta- tion, people would face threats such as attacks from wild animals, while others would face at- tacks from hostile communities who robbed their cargo, making it hard for transportation to be carried from one place to another. The Erie Canal’s development created water stretches of approximately 360 miles, and it was recognized as the water movement method connecting the Midwest to people of different terrains such as Ohio, Illinois, and Newyork . The development of the Canal allowed residents to use the Canal for various activities such as migration from one place to another, and people would use the Canal to ship various products. The development of the Canal allowed people to overcome divided territory, which led to the Atlantic Ocean and the State’s economy. (Duncan, 2017) Before the C anal was opened, larger businesses were only opened in the southern part of New Orleans and the eastern ports, such as the port of Philadelphia. Settlers in the western and the Northern parts of Marely participated in trade. If the northern settlers wanted to participate in trade, they had to navigate toward the Mississippi River, and it was not easily assessable to some of the residents. With the accessibility of the Canal in several areas, most residents preferred us- ing it, thus enhancing the region’s economic status. Once the development of the Erie Canal was opened, it led to a stepping stone for the American economy as it enhanced the location where business members could conduct their trade. Before the Canal’s development, people in the western and the northern parts had a hard time as they were shipping their products from one point to another for sale. After the Canal was developed, the growth of traders was experienced as more people were willing to trade, and there were east means of transport that connected different locations, and it had reduced the number of challenges compared to road transportation. Since the Erie Canal was able to serve New York residents, it encouraged European im- migrants to come to the region where they came to the United States for activities associated with trade . The emergence of the Europeans in the American market marked a significant turning point as it allowed them to introduce new products to the American market, which allowed the American market to grow. ( Vitaliano, 2016 ) This encouraged more traders to visit the American market, expanding it. With the Canal, the Europeans spread to different parts of the country, such as Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, where they collaborated with the Americans to work on trade marking a significant point for the American territory. Before the development of the Canal, most of the residents were entitled to living in a common geographical location, leaving other places unoccupied. With the development of the Canal that covered 360 miles , people could spread across unoccupied locations where they would come together to participate in trade-related activities. With the development of the Canal, more people could travel over vast regions to search for food, thus enhancing the social and eco- nomic activities covered in the region. In the 19th century, the immigrants needed to settle in new locations, and there was a need for them to travel with goods. Other travelers, such as the Europeans, traveled with manufactured goods and had to ship them within the shortest time possible to get more goods to sell. Develop- ment of the Erie Canal allowed them to have an effective means of shipping their products as they were required to load their goods to the boat, allowing them to ship their goods to required destinations such as Newyork State. Shipping products with the boat was considered an efficient means of transport as once the goods were loaded to the boat; they would be loaded to destina- tions compared to donkeys who had to stop to eat and rest. ( Katherine, 2019) In the 18th century, many residents used to participate in fishing as an economic activity where they would travel for long distances to get fish. After the Erie Canal was expanded to cover more than 360 miles , people considered the expansion as an opportunity where they start fishing in the river. The Canal allowed residents to use it for fishing and efficiently transport fish from one place to another as they needed boats for fishing and traveling. (Loretta, 2022 ) Fur- thermore, the residents who had settled along the Erie Canal would use the Canal for irrigation of crops where they would use them later for barter trade. The C anal was essential to people who had plantations around them as it encouraged them to participate in trade, thus encouraging more residents to participate in working on economic activities. The Canal was constructed 360 miles passing via several territories, allowing efficiency in the transportation of various inputs and products used for trade. Using the Canal for trans- portation would take less than half the cost and time travelers would use when shipping products from one location to another. This allowed residents to get their products in the market on time before they got expired. The development of the Canal also allowed the shipping of affordable goods to newly accessible areas, enhancing the trade carried out by the population. With the ex- pansion of the Canal from various territories, different commodities were shipped to the new yolk, which facilitated the economic boom experienced in the nation . (Brad, 2020 ) Inconclusively , the Erie Canal played a crucial role in interconnecting several geographi- cal locations with New York giving, allowing traders to move from one place to another to par- ticipate in trade. Traders did not only use the Canal because it was easy to ship commodities with it, but they also equipped them with an effective navigation system as it would be hard for them to get lost while they were on their way to the forest. Due to the effective transportation system and navigating system from the Canal, many transporters could get to the market on time, thus allowing them to effectively participate in trade, thus marking a significant turning point in the economy of the United States.
